Sagboje Urges Stronger Youth Collaboration to Tackle Unemployment, Drug Abuse in Delta State
The State Chairman of the Delta State Council of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Comrade Odiri Milton Sagboje, CLN, has called for sustained collaboration among youth-focused organizations as a strategic response to unemployment, drug abuse, cultism, and declining youth participation in governance across the state.
Sagboje made the call while receiving the leadership and members of the National Youth Assembly of Nigeria (NYAN), Delta State Chapter, during a courtesy visit in Asaba. He described the engagement as timely, noting that it reflects a growing resolve among young people to unite around shared challenges and workable solutions.
According to him, the complex social and economic issues confronting youths can only be effectively addressed through a united front, coordinated advocacy, and purposeful partnerships that go beyond rhetoric to deliver tangible outcomes.
Discussions during the meeting focused on youth participation in governance, leadership development, voter sensitization, unemployment, and the rising threats of drug abuse and cultism. Sagboje warned that drug abuse and cult-related activities continue to undermine youth productivity and community safety, stressing the need for proactive awareness campaigns, grassroots engagement, and collaboration with relevant authorities to curb the menace.
He further emphasized that youth empowerment through skills acquisition, capacity building, and access to opportunities remains a critical pathway to reducing unemployment and economic vulnerability. Youth Participation in Governance: How Delta State Youth Can Make a Difference
Governance is most effective when it reflects the voices, ideas, and aspirations of the people especially the youth. In Delta State, young people make up a significant portion of the population, yet their full potential in governance is still unfolding. The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Delta State Chapter believes that meaningful youth participation is not only important, but essential for sustainable development.
Why Youth Participation Matters
Youth participation in governance brings fresh perspectives, innovation, and energy into decision-making processes. Young people understand the challenges facing their communities, from education and employment to security and technology—and are well-positioned to propose practical solutions.
When youth are involved in governance, policies become more inclusive, leadership becomes more responsive, and trust between government and citizens is strengthened. Active participation also helps young people develop leadership skills, civic responsibility, and a sense of ownership in the future of their state.
The Role of NYCN Delta State
The NYCN Delta State Chapter serves as a bridge between young people and government institutions. Through advocacy, dialogue, and structured engagement, the Council creates platforms where youth voices can be heard and respected.
By organizing town hall meetings, leadership workshops, civic education programs, and policy discussions, NYCN ensures that young people are informed, confident, and prepared to engage constructively in governance. The Council also represents youth interests in consultations with government agencies and stakeholders.
Ways Delta State Youth Can Get Involved
There are many practical ways young people in Delta State can participate in governance:
-
Civic Engagement: Participating in community meetings, youth forums, and public consultations.
-
Advocacy: Speaking up on issues that affect youth and communities through organized platforms.
-
Leadership Roles: Serving in youth councils, student bodies, and community development associations.
-
Policy Participation: Contributing ideas, research, and feedback during policy formulation and implementation processes.
-
Volunteerism: Supporting development projects and public service initiatives at the local level.
These actions may seem small, but collectively, they create powerful change.
Building Responsible Future Leaders
Youth participation is not just about being present—it is about being prepared. NYCN Delta State focuses on equipping young people with leadership skills, ethical values, and knowledge of governance processes. This ensures that participation is meaningful, constructive, and impactful.
By mentoring young leaders and promoting transparency, accountability, and service, the Council is helping to raise a generation that understands governance as a responsibility, not a privilege.
A Call to Action
The future of Delta State depends on the involvement of its youth today. Governance should not be left to a few; it should be a collective effort driven by informed and active citizens.
The National Youth Council of Nigeria, Delta State Chapter calls on every young person to take an active role—ask questions, participate in discussions, volunteer, and lead with integrity. When youth engage in governance, they help shape policies, strengthen democracy, and build a better future for all.
By empowering the youth, we strengthen governance.
By participating today, we build the leaders of tomorrow.

These experiences have expanded horizons, exposed youths to best practices, and equipped them to implement innovative solutions locally, turning global lessons into local impact.
5. Inspiring the Next Generation
Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of NYCN Delta State’s success is its ripple effect. Every empowered youth becomes a mentor, a role model, and a change agent for others. The Council’s programs ensure that success is not just personal—it multiplies as participants inspire peers, siblings, and community members to aim higher and dream bigger.

The Delta State Chapter understands that leadership is not just about authority—it’s about vision, responsibility, and service. By instilling these values early, the Council is shaping a generation of young leaders who are prepared to tackle challenges, drive innovation, and create sustainable solutions for their communities.
Many young people who have participated in NYCN programs have gone on to become influential leaders in politics, business, education, and social development. Their stories are proof that when youth are empowered, the impact is far-reaching—not just for the individual, but for society as a whole.
Collaboration for Greater Impact
NYCN Delta State works closely with the Delta State Government, international youth bodies, NGOs, and private sector partners. This collaboration ensures that programs are well-funded, strategic, and aligned with both national and global youth development goals. Through partnerships, the Council is able to expand its reach, connect youths with global opportunities, and expose them to international best practices.
